What Chefra does,
in detail.

Import a recipe from a link, a photo or screenshot, or pasted text. Organize recipes into cookbooks, plan meals on a day, week or month calendar, and cook along inside any recipe.

01

Bring recipes in

Import a recipe by pasting a link from a recipe website, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or X. It works when the post or page has readable text, captions or speech; some posts can't be read.

Plan on a calendar

Plan meals on a day, week or month calendar — saved recipes or quick free-text meals, with your own meal times.

Totals, automatically

Chefra totals your grocery list automatically. Amounts whose units can't combine are Listed separately; totals across weight and volume are estimates marked ~.

02

How it works

  1. 01

    Import

Import a recipe from a link, a photo or screenshot, or pasted text.

  2. 02

    Plan

Plan meals on a day, week or month calendar.

  3. 03

    Shop

Send the ingredients from today's, this week's or this month's meal plan to your grocery list, skipping what's already on it. It sends them to the list you pick.

03Import

From a link, a photo or pasted text.

Import a recipe from a link, a photo or screenshot, or pasted text — or share it into Chefra straight from another app.

Sharing straight into Chefra from another app works in the Android app and in the web app installed on an Android phone. It isn't available in the iPhone or iPad app yet.

More on the recipe importer

  • Links from websites and social apps

Import a recipe by pasting a link from a recipe website, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook or X.

It works when the post or page has readable text, captions or speech; some posts can't be read (login walls, no text at all).

  • A big batch at once

Import a big batch of recipes at once (Premium) from a list of links or a spreadsheet, straight into a cookbook — it runs in the background and keeps a history.

Batches run one at a time.

04Organize

A library you can find things in.

Organize recipes into cookbooks with your own cover photo, then search, filter by tag, sort and bulk-manage what's inside.

More on organizing recipes

  • Rate, tag and sort

Rate, favorite and tag your recipes, add several photos, and sort your library by rating, quickest, most cooked or newest.

  • Search

Search your recipes by title, description and ingredients.

It doesn't search instructions or notes.

  • A cooking journal

Keep a private cooking journal on every recipe — note what you changed and pin the entries that matter.

  • A description in one tap

Have a recipe description written for you with one tap.

It drafts a description you can edit.

05Cook

At the stove.

Cook along inside any recipe with step-by-step navigation, timers, progress and a screen that stays awake.

  • Scale and convert

Scale any recipe up or down and switch its ingredients between imperial and metric.

The unit choice applies across your account.

  • Nutrition

See estimated calories and nutrition per serving for any recipe.

06Plan

Decide dinner before you're hungry.

Plan meals on a day, week or month calendar — saved recipes or quick free-text meals, with your own meal times — then adjust servings, undo changes, clear a stretch, or copy a day's plan to other dates.

More on the meal planner

  • From plan to list

Send the ingredients from today's, this week's or this month's meal plan to your grocery list, skipping what's already on it.

It sends them to the list you pick.

07Grocery list

From recipe to grocery list.

Chefra totals your grocery list automatically.

Amounts whose units can't combine are Listed separately; totals across weight and volume are estimates marked ~.

  • Estimates across measures

For everyday foods Chefra estimates across different measures (cups and grams, pieces and cups) using USDA FoodData Central weights, marked with '~'.

A curated set of everyday foods, not all foods.

  • Listed separately

Items that can't be added together show as one line marked 'Listed separately', and 'to taste' items stay their own row.

A 'Listed separately' line shows no total.

  • Look-alikes stay apart

Chefra won't merge things that only look alike — dried and fresh oregano, ground and whole cumin, red and white onions, salted and unsalted butter, canned and fresh tomatoes all stay on separate lines, even when the difference is written in brackets. Prep words like chopped, diced or minced don't keep lines apart.

Synonyms (flour vs all-purpose flour) don't combine yet.

  • Food groups, stores and notes

Grocery items sort themselves into food groups (Premium), and each item can carry its own store and a note.

Food-group sorting uses fixed keyword rules, not AI. Items with no matching keyword go to 'Other'.

Items can be moved by hand.

  • One tap from a recipe

From a recipe, add every ingredient you haven't checked off to any grocery list in one tap — pick the list, or make a new one right there — and the items are on it the moment you look.

  • A list from a photo

Snap a photo of a grocery list — handwritten or printed — and Chefra turns it into items on your list.

  • Clear, don't lose

Clearing checked-off grocery items doesn't delete them — they move into that list's library, and one tap adds them back.

  • Undo a delete

Deleted grocery items go to that list's trash and can be restored — an item deleted while ticked comes back ticked.

08Share

Cook with other people.

Share any recipe as a web link anyone can open without an account — with a rich preview in iMessage and WhatsApp — or send it to your feed, a Kitchen, email, text or your phone's share sheet.

Only recipes set to Public or Unlisted can be shared by link; private recipes can't. Saving a shared recipe needs an account.

More on cooking with family

  • Your feed

Follow other cooks and scroll a live feed — like, comment, repost, save and share posts, and choose whether each post is public, followers-only or private.

  • Saved

Save posts and recipes from your feed and Kitchens into one Saved page — a saved recipe stays as it was shared, even if the author later changes it.

  • Kitchens and Circles

Inside a Kitchen or Circle, post photos and recipes, comment, like, @mention members and search past posts.

Photos only — no video. A Kitchen can be set so only admins post.

  • Running a Kitchen or Circle

Run your Kitchen or Circle your way: make members admins or moderators, require approval to join, and share invite links that expire or run out.

    Owners and admins only.

  • Messages

Message people one-to-one or in group chats — send photos and recipes, send a recipe to several people at once, and pin, mute, archive or mark chats unread.

People can choose to accept messages only from those they follow.

  • Your profile

Make your profile yours — photo, cover, bio, handle, and a links page for your Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or website.

Profiles and link pages are seen by people signed in to Chefra.

  • Notifications

Get notified about likes, comments, mentions, new followers, messages and invites — and turn each kind on or off.

09Privacy & your data

Your data, your call.

No ads, anywhere in Chefra.

  • Privacy settings

Privacy on your terms: hide your follower lists, keep posts to followers, only accept messages from people you follow, and set who sees your recipes by default.

  • Block and report

Block anyone — it removes follows both ways and closes shared chats — and report posts, comments, messages or people.

  • Photo screening

Every photo uploaded to Chefra is screened automatically, and images that break the rules are refused.

  • Location data

In the iPhone and Android apps, location data is removed from the photos you upload.

  • Download your data

Download all your data — a full account archive, plus your recipes as a CSV file.

It's a download you run yourself, not a sync to another app.

  • Delete your account

Delete your account yourself, from inside the app, any time.
